The Work and Person of the Holy Spirit Pt. 18 Tongues Conclusion

Psalm 99:9   Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at his holy hill; for the LORD our God is holy.  The Psalmist shows us that we should exalt Jehovah Elohim and worship at His holy hill which is in Jerusalem.  He shows us the reason for worshiping Jehovah Elohim is the beauty of His holiness.  I do not see any reason why we cannot engage in this lovely activity of praise every day.  Jehovah Elohim is giving us life and breath and we can praise Him while we work, while we do chores and while we are with our families.  May we all seek to honor Him this day.  Paul explores the misuse of tongues at Corinth using music  analogies In the next paragraph of his discussion on the misuse of tongues Paul asks a question that helps the Corinthians see that speaking to them in tongues will not profit them.  However, if he speaks for God in their language either by revelation, knowledge or prophesying that comes from the Spirit of God, th...

The Work and Person of the Holy Spirit. Pt. 17 Tongues

What will we do with the time God gives to us? Psalm 90:10-12 The days of our years  are threescore years and ten; and if by reason of strength  they be fourscore years, yet  is their strength labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away.  Who knoweth the power of thine anger? even according to thy fear,  so is thy wrath. So teach  us to number our days, that we may apply  our hearts unto wisdom. Here we are at the beginning of another work week.  Time certainly passes quickly and the Psalmist helps us have a right perspective on these things.  70 years is the normal lifespan and some reach 80 years by reason of strength.  He is teaching us that we must ask God to "number" our days in order that we might love and serve Jehovah as our life's priority. The word number is an accounting term meaning to tally up how many days or years have gone by when compared to the lifespan of 70-80 years and then to use eac...

THe Work and Person of the Holy Spirit. Pt. 16 The gift of Tongues

Psalm 84:10  For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. Good Evening on this Lord's Day.  May the words of the Psalmist in the text above be an expression of how we feel about worshiping our Worthy Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  It is an attitude of humility and a longing to be in the Temple of God and function as a doorkeeper.  The Psalmist does not want anything to do with that which is evil and this should be the same desire that we have in our hearts.  Today we will begin looking at the gift of tongues.  The word translated "divers" is a word that refers to nations, tribes or families.  The word translated "tongues" means the language or dialect used by a particular people distinct from that of other nations.  This gift is about speaking in foreign languages. 1 Corinthians 12:10-11 To another the working of miracles; to a...

The Work and Person of the Holy Spirit. Pt. 15 Miracles, Prophecies, Discerning

This is another day that the Lord hath made, I will be rejoice and be glad in it!!!  Good morning to you...... Today we will try to cover 3 more of the spiritual gifts listed in 1 Corinthians 12.  1 Corinthians 12:10-11 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another  divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:  But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. Miracles The Greek word translated "miracles" is found in the English word "dynamite" or "dynamic."  Dynamite refers to explosives and dynamic refers to continuous productive activity or change. Both of these words give us an idea of what was taking place when Paul wrote to the church at Corinth. Miracles included things like casting out demons, blinding a sorcerer named Elymas. Let's look at part of Peter's first sermon in Acts 2.  In this text P...

The Work and Person of the Holy Spirit. Pt. 14 Healing Conclusion

Good morning Dear and Faithful Readers. I did some more word searching on "healed or healing" and found that the mention of the gift tapered off substantially after the book of Acts.  I believe that this is because God gave these wonderful gifts for the express purpose of proving that Peter, James, John, Paul and others were His spokesmen.  I find no mention of a promise for the permanent continuation of prominent sign gifts like healing.  However, God does answer prayer and He still can heal someone of an illness or disease if He chooses to.  The Apostle James gives us some good instruction in this regard. Some may say that "by his stripes we are healed" quoting from the Isaiah 53 passage, pointing to Christ's sacrifice.  However, God is always aiming at the human heart.  It is the sin sick heart that needs to be and can be healed by being born again.  The reality is that we are living in a sin cursed world and we are dealing with the ef...

The Work and Person of the Holy Spirit. Pt. 13 The gift of healing

Good Morning to all of you.  We are having some marvellous sunny weather without the intense heat and humidity.  The breezes are refreshing and the overnight temperatures are dipping into the 50s.  We see many trees that are changing color with gold and burnt orange leaves appearing against the bright blue sky.  The apostolic ministry continued to grow throughout the book of Acts.  The text below notes that sick people were carried out into the streets on their beds so if perhaps Peter walked by, his shadow might pass over them.  There was a multitude of people from around Jerusalem added to this first group of people.  The text tells us they were all healed. Acts 5:15-16  Insomuch that they brought forth the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that at the least the shadow of Peter passing by might overshadow some of them.  There came also a multitude out of the cities round about unto Jerusalem, bringi...

The Work and Person of the Holy Spirit. Pt. 12 Gift of Healing

Good Morning to all of our Readers from around the world and welcome back to our study on the Holy Spirit. In Ohio, the morning daylight is arriving later now and in the evenings it is getting dark noticeably sooner than during the summer months.  This truth reminds me of something the Lord Jesus Christ taught. While He was in the world, Christ was the light of the world.  Today each believer is to reflect the light of our indwelling Lord into this world.  Like our Lord, we must work while Christ is giving us light to shine the gospel into dark places.  John 9:4-5  I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.   As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. It is of interest to see what scripture says about the born again child of God with regard to light. Salt & Light Mathew 5:13-16  Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it...

The Work and Person of the Holy Spirit. Pt. 11 Gift of Healing

Good morning everyone. We have had issues with squirrels gnawing on our nice lawn chairs probably because they are made from recycled plastic components.  They are cute and acrobatic but I must confess I do not like when they damage the furniture.  Perhaps they are upset since I took down the squirrel feeder we used over the winter months:) Today we will look at the gift of healing.  There is much confusion about this gift and I will try to carefully show us what the scripture says about healing.  It will probably need a couple of posts to cover the material adequately for our understanding.  Purpose of Sign Gifts. Remember that "sign gifts" were sent from God to authenticate or certify that the Old Testament judges, prophets and men like Moses were genuinely speaking for God.  The same reason holds true for the Lord Jesus and His apostles.  Certification of spokesmen and proof that God is speaking through them is the primary reason these gifts...
