Good Friday Lesson Christ Our Savior Suffered And Died For Us

Good morning to all. I would like to post some of the key texts that relate to the vicarious death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 53:1  Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

Who will believe the gospel message? The report of the prophets, of John the Baptist, and Christ’s own report of himself.

The Jews did not receive the report, and for this reason He was not manifested to them as the promised Messiah. "He came unto his own, but his own received him not. John 1:11."

Isaiah 53:2  For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

Before the Father , Jesus grew up as a tender plant, but to the Jews he was as a root out of a dry ground. He was not beautiful like young David, or tall and strong like young king Saul.

Messiah grew silently, as a root from an ancient stock, seemingly dead, namely, the house of David, which was then in a decayed state.

Isaiah 53:3  He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

Israel at large, despised and rejected their own Messiah. Jesus is described as a man of sorrows. He wept over Jerusalem and grieved over the hardness of those who rejected the gospel.

He was despised and not held in high regard by most people, and especially by the religious leaders.

Isaiah 53:4-5  Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. 5  But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Yet, Jesus shouldered the burden of our griefs, and He carried our sorrows. The people observing Christ on the cross assumed that God afflicted Jesus.

The true reality is that Jesus was wounded because He bore our sins on the cross. He was bruised because of our iniquities.

The chastisement and wrath of God that should be poured out on us for our sins, was poured out on Jesus as He hung on the cross.

Isaiah 53:6  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

This is why Jesus suffered and died on a cruel cross. We were sinners, who were far astray from God, wandering lost in the wilderness of sin.

Jehovah laid all mankind's sins upon Jesus Christ. He is our substitute Lamb of God, the perfect sacrifice. This is why the gospel is exclusive. There is no other name whereby we must be saved.

Isaiah 53:7  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.

This describes Jesus's demeanor when tried by the religious and civil authorities. He did not insist upon his rights. He did not angrily accuse them of wrongdoing. He did not explode with rage.

He took all the verbal and physical abuse and went to the cross as the Father's obedient Son. He died in our place, and died for us, so that those who believe in Jesus Christ, might receive eternal life.

Isaiah 53:8  He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.

This describes the death of Jesus on the cross. He was cut off from the living.

Isaiah 53:9  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.

This describes the burial place of Jesus in a new tomb of a wealthy man. He was found to be innocent by Pontius Pilate after intense interrogation.

Isaiah 53:10  Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the LORD shall prosper in his hand.

This describes the intent and plan of God for the death of His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. It pleased the Father to bruise Jesus on the cross, and to make His only begotten Son, a perfect, once for all, offering for sin.

At His resurrection, Christ shall see His seed, all those who are born again through repentant faith in His name.

Isaiah 53:11  He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

Jesus shall look back on the travail of His soul on the cross, and be satisfied because He perfectly fulfilled the law of God, and He nailed our sins to His cross.

Many sinners will hear the gospel and turn to Jesus with repentant faith, and be regenerated by the Spirit of God. They will be justified in heaven, declared innocent of all their sins, because of faith in Christ.

Isaiah 53:12  Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

Therefore, the Father has highly exalted His Son, Jesus Christ. He has given Him a name above all names such that every knew is going to bow down before Him, and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord of lord, to the glory of the Father.

Jesus humbled himself and became obedient to the death of the cross, and accomplished the Father's plan to save all humanity from our sins.

Philippians 2:5-11  Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: 6  Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8  And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9  Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10  That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11  And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

May these beautiful texts help us remember all the sufferings of Jesus Christ were because He died in our place. He endured the wrath of God upon Himself for our sins.

He became sin for us who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him (2 Corinthians 5:17-21).

This time of Jesus passion, agony, suffering, death, burial,  and resurrection serve one main purpose. That all who hear the gospel and respond with repentant faith, shall be saved, born again, adopted into the family of God, given a home in heaven and receive eternal life.

Have you repented of your sins and called upon the Lord Jesus Christ to save you? He will save you to the uttermost. Make this day the day of your salvation.

Bob
