The True Story Of Christmas Part 3 Jesus Christ Literally Fulfills Isaiah's Prophecies

May this morning be filled with the grace of God flowing into us as we seek to love and serve our great God.

Jesus Christ the seed of the woman born of a virgin.

Isaiah 7:14  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Isaiah the prophet is going to give us some tremendous insight into the birth of the seed of the woman. A virgin is going to conceive and bear a son whose name shall be called Immanuel.

A virgin is going to give birth to a son. This ties directly to Genesis 3:15 and the special phrase the seed of the woman.

No earthly man is involved in the procreation process for the birth of Christ.

The seed of the woman is given one name in this text, the lovely name Immanuel.

The Hebrew word translated "Immanuel" means "God with us" and it is the prophetic name for the Messiah.

This sign came from the Lord Himself. Isaiah wrote the inspired words of this book about 750 years before the birth of Jesus Christ. God said how the seed of the woman would be born almost 8 centuries before it happened.

Messiah shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God and the Prince of Peace.

Isaiah 9:6  For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

The phrase "a child is born" connects once again to Genesis 3:15 and the seed of the woman.

The prophecy declares that the seed of a woman will be a son and he shall be given authority over all earthly governments.

His name is Wonderful

The name "Wonderful" is from a word that refers to the wonders and miracles worked by the hand of Jehovah.

Psalm 40:5  Many, O LORD my God, are thy wonderful works which thou hast done, and thy thoughts which are to us-ward: they cannot be reckoned up in order unto thee: if I would declare and speak of them, they are more than can be numbered.

King David said that the wonderful works of God and His good thoughts toward those who trust Him cannot be numbered.

However, the most wonderful work God did was becoming a man in the birth of Jesus Christ, the God-Man.

Matthew 21:15  And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; they were sore displeased,

The name Jesus means "Jehovah is savior" and as God in the flesh, Jesus constantly performed innumerable wonderful works.

Notice that the self righteous religious leaders were very unhappy that Christ did wonderful things.

Jesus Christ is Wonderful in His very nature. He is Wonderful in the execution of His office of Prophet, Priest and King.

He is Wonderful in His relationships with the redeemed people of God in that He is our faithful and sympathetic high priest and He is not ashamed to call us brethren.

His name is Counsellor

The name "Counsellor" means that Christ gives counsel and carries out His plans. He advises and mandates perfectly according to the will of His Father.

This word is often associated with the mind of the Lord or the Spirit of God.

Isaiah 40:13  Who hath directed the Spirit of the LORD, or being his counsellor hath taught him?  With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?

Isaiah shows us the meaning of this title as it applies to Christ. No one directs the Spirit of Jehovah. No one teaches Him anything.

He has the full mind of God because He is part of the Godhead. The same is true of Jesus Christ who was given the Spirit without measure or restriction.

John 3:34  For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

His name is the mighty God

The name mighty God (El Gibbor) refers to the One, True God of Heaven in contrast to the false gods of idolatry. He is the strong God who is mighty in word and deed.

On the road to Emmaus some of Jesus' disciples were walking and downcast because of His crucifixion.

Christ joined them as they walked, although they did not recognize Jesus.

The text below contains their assessment of the work and person of Christ when He asked them of the things that had transpired.

Notice they said Christ was mighty in word and deed before God.

Luke 24:19  And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

His name is the everlasting Father

The seed of the woman, Jesus Christ was given the name "the everlasting Father."

The word everlasting means ancient in past, and continually existing forever.

How can Christ be the everlasting Father? 83 times in the gospels Jesus refers to "my Father" when referring to His heavenly Father.

John 10:17-18  Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.   No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.

John 10:30  I and my Father are one.

His name is the Prince of Peace

Christ is the prince or ruler, commander, chief officer of peace. Jesus came to this world to bring peace in place of hatred and discord.

Peace means more than quietness and tranquility instead of civil disorder. It means especially friendship with God.

A word that means the opposite of peace is enmity. This word means that we are fighting against God and that we are His enemies.

Jesus Christ is truly prince of Peace because His work on the cross removed the enmity between man and Holy God.

The sufferings of Christ abolished the enmity. His death on the cross killed the enmity and He can reconcile man to God.

Ephesians 2:13-17  But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;  Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;   And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:   And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

Points to Ponder.....

  • The seed of the woman is to be born to a virgin maiden.
  • He is given the Divine name Immanuel which means God with us.
  • He is named Wonderful because of His wonderful works.
  • He is named Counsellor because He acts with the full mind of God.
  • He is named the Mighty God who does mighty words and deeds that cannot be resisted.
  • He is named the everlasting Father because He is one with His Father.
  • He is the Prince of Peace who takes away the enmity between God and man.
I hope and pray that we can all see more clearly the truth behind the birth of Jesus Christ. His birth, life, death and resurrection is the primary focal point of human history.
