First Corinthians 15 Part 3 The Glory Of Christ's Sufferings, Death And Resurrection
1 Corinthians 15:1-3 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2) By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3) For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;
Paul began this chapter by setting the foundation of Jesus Christ's vicarious suffering and death on our behalf. "Christ died for our sins."
This is the same gospel that Paul preached in every city he entered during his missionary journeys.
Responding by faith when the gospel is preached means receiving it as it is in truth, the Word of God to man (See 1 Thessalonians 2:13).
A key phrase used by Paul as the anchor for doctrinal truth is that Christ's death, burial and resurrection were done "according to the scriptures."
The suffering of Messiah was foretold by the prophets of God. His death for us was foretold by the prophets.
His resurrection was foretold by the prophets, thus all these things happened according to the scriptures.
Keeping this truth in memory is maintaining an ongoing faith in gospel truth that is necessary for salvation.
The first fundamental truth of the gospel is that Jesus Christ is God's perfect Lamb who took away the sins of the world (See John 1:1-18, 29; 3:15-21).
The second vital truth of the gospel of Christ is the historical fact of Jesus Christ's resurrection.
At the end of this lesson I included a list of 351 prophecies literally fulfilled by Jesus Christ.
These are not arranged in any particular order, but they serve as excellent proof that it all was done "according to the scriptures."
Undeniable historical reality of Jesus' burial, resurrection and ascension.
1 Corinthians 15:4-7 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: 5) And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: 6) After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep. 7) After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.
Each gospel records the suffering, burial and resurrection of Jesus.
John 20:1-10 The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, when it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre. 2) Then she runneth, and cometh to Simon Peter, and to the other disciple, whom Jesus loved, and saith unto them, They have taken away the Lord out of the sepulchre, and we know not where they have laid him. 3) Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. 4) So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. 5) And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. 6) Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, 7) And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. 8) Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. 9) For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. 10) Then the disciples went away again unto their own home.
John's account of Jesus' resurrection reminds us that the Old Testament prophets also foretold that Messiah would rise from the dead.
There are several prophets who wrote about Messiah's resurrection including Psalm 16:10, Psalm 22:15; 22:22-31; Isaiah 25:8; 26:19; 53:10-12 and Hosea 13:14.
Therefore, Paul wants us to know that Jesus literally fulfilled Old Testament prophecy.
Christ's sufferings, death on the cross, burial and resurrection is God's glorious plan of redemption.
Paul lists the witnesses to the resurrection of Christ. Peter is first on the list, followed by John and then the twelve, in addition the ladies who arrived at the tomb first.
Essential truth is that Christ died for our sins, and was buried, and rose again. Jesus was delivered for our offences and raised again from the dead for our justification. (See Romans 4:25)
Jesus was offered as the perfect, once for all sacrifice for our sins, and rose again, to show that he had obtained forgiveness for us, and was accepted of God in this offering.
Christ's death and resurrection are the very substance of evangelical truth. This is why we receive spiritual life now, and hope of eternal life in heaven with God.
Notice the testimony of the apostle Paul. After Jesus was seen by Peter, John, the women and the twelve, He was seen by more than 500 Christians at one time!
Paul told the Corinthians that most of the 500 believers who saw Christ were still alive and could verify His resurrection for them.
Paul saw the resurrected Christ years later on the road to Damascus.
1 Corinthians 15:8 And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.
Acts 9:1-6 And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, 2) And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. 3) And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: 4) And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? 5) And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. 6) And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.
Paul never forgot the glory of Jesus Christ stopping him in his tracks as he was traveling to Damascus to persecute Christians.
Paul's conversion to Christ was powerful. A blinding light appeared which would be the glory of God that shined brighter than the mid day sun.
This appearance of Christ and His unfiltered glory sent Paul straight down to the earth on his face.
This is what happened to God's prophets who saw His glory. It happened to Ezekiel, Isaiah, Moses along with Peter, James and John.
Jesus spoke to Saul (his name before it was changed) and Saul replied with a question: "Who art thou Lord?"
Indeed, this proud, educated Pharisee and persecutor of God's church, was bowing down before the God who gave him life.
Paul lived out his remaining days seeking to know His Lord more intimately.
After Jesus told Saul who He was, Saul asked another question. "Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?"
Paul lived out his remaining years by serving Jesus Christ and encouraging others to follow hard after Jesus Christ.
We must know the Lord Jesus Christ through repentant faith, or we will not see Him in heaven.
Once we know Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we are to finish our earthly pilgrimage by serving Him.
Paul also saw the resurrected Christ on the road to Damascus.
1 Corinthians 15:9-11 For I am the least of the apostles, that am not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10) But by the grace of God I am what I am: and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain; but I laboured more abundantly than they all: yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. 11) Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed.
Paul never forgot his old life as a hater of Christ and a relentless persecutor of His church.
This served as heartfelt motivation to serve God with all of his being. Indeed, Paul traveled more distance than any other apostle.
He endured more hardship than any other apostle. He counted it all joy to suffer while serving His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
God's grace was a constant source of joy, wonder, and love for Paul. He wrote more about the grace and mercy of God than any of the other apostles.
Therefore, he sought to anchor the hearts of the Corinthians to the gospel of Christ, whether he preached it to them, or whether someone else preached it.
Our own hearts must be securely tethered to gospel truth because it is the good news from God about how sinners can be saved and adopted into the family of God.
Paul could say with accuracy and honesty, that he worked harder and longer than any other apostle of Christ.
His missionary trips covered more than ten thousand miles on land and hundreds more by sea.
He endured countless hardships along his journeys but he gladly endured them in order to preach the gospel of Christ.
God used Paul to write fourteen books of the New Testament for our great spiritual benefit.
This is why Paul can tell us to follow him as he followed hard after Christ.
1 Corinthians 4:16 Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me.
1 Corinthians 11:1 Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
Philippians 3:17 Brethren, be followers together of me, and mark them which walk so as ye have us for an ensample.
The apostle is not bragging or setting himself up on a pedestal.
Rather, Paul is calling us to live this life with the same passion and love for Christ that he had in his heart.
His example of following hard after Christ is worthy of emulation by all Christians. Paul teaches us about suffering and grace.
He teaches us sublime truth about God's glory and how we ought to live in response to that truth.
He shows us the glory of God's grace and mercy in his life, that we too, might praise God for it.
All of these things are founded upon the suffering, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
May the Spirit of God open our minds to these wonderful truths.
May we be ready to share gospel truth with other people.
May we determine to live a life marked by unselfishness and a love for God and others.
