What Does God Say About Abortion?

I have a burden to speak about some of the great moral issues that we face today.

Abortion is a political hot button issue.  Christians need to know what God says about this sin so that we may vote wisely in elections.

Many professing Christians are pro-abortion. Many pastors are pro-abortion.

How is it possible for those who profess faith in the God who gave life to all living things, to demand a woman's right to kill her unborn baby?

Our culture has devolved into a culture of death where women vehemently demand the right to kill their unborn babies.

Globally, there are about 73 million abortions each year, a truly staggering number that shows how barbaric "civilized" people are.

This is an issue that Christians must contend with and I want to give us the truth and principles from scripture to guide us.

Man was created by God and did not evolve from other life forms.

Genesis 1:27-28  So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. 28  And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

God created two genders, no more and no less. Other descriptions of gender are deviation from the truth and must be rejected based upon what God's Word says.

God created mankind with intent and purpose, namely for us to procreate, till the earth, and have dominion over all other living things.

God did not give man the right to abuse His creation. Rather, we are to be caretakers and good stewards of it.

Psalm 100:3  Know ye that the LORD he is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Listen to the Psalmist. Jehovah is God and there is none other. God made man and we did not evolve. Those who promote evolution deny the truth of scripture.

God is the source of all life, plant and animal!

Genesis 2:7  And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.

God created all things including humans. He breathed into Adam the breath of life and Adam became a living soul.

God created man as the pinnacle of creation. Man was created with a soul and the ability have fellowship with God.

This makes mankind very different from all other life forms.

We have a soul, a rational, thinking mind with emotions and personality and a will. We were created to commune with God.

We are created in the image of God which means that we were created to reflect God into the very world He created.

When Adam sinned, all humanity was plunged into sin. The fall of man marred our soul, mind and emotions. Since then all people are born spiritually dead.

This is why we must preach and teach the gospel of Christ, so that sinners dead in sins, can be regenerated by God's Spirit and receive spiritual life!

Jesus Christ, the Word of God is the creator and source of life.

John 1:1-4  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2  The same was in the beginning with God. 3  All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4  In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

John's gospel opens by declaring that Jesus Christ the Son of God, is also the Word of God incarnate.

This Word was with God and is God and He (Christ) created all things and gave life to all things (See also Colossians 1:16-18, Hebrews 1:1-3).

All life comes from God as the Bible clearly teaches, and those who take the life of unborn babies are committing murder. As with any sin, God will hold the sinner accountable.

Life begins in the womb at conception .

Psalm 139:13-18  13  For thou hast possessed my reins: thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15  My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 16  Thine eyes did see my substance, yet being unperfect; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. 17  How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! 18  If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with thee.

David tells us that Jehovah covered him in his mother's womb, referring to the amniotic sac and amniotic fluid that protect an infant and nurtures its growth in the womb.

God designed childbirth in this manner and this is why David exclaimed "I am fearfully and wonderfully made."

God gave David life at conception. He knew all of the details of David before he was born. Thus, life is from God and must be viewed as a sacred gift.

Jeremiah 1:4-5  Then the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, 5  Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

Jehovah spoke to the prophet Jeremiah and states explicitly that He formed Jeremiah in his mother's womb.

He knew what kind of man Jeremiah would be and set him apart to be His prophet.

The scriptures are clear on this matter, that life begins at conception in the womb.

Luke 1:39-42  And Mary arose in those days, and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Juda; 40  And entered into the house of Zacharias, and saluted Elisabeth. 41  And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost: 42  And she spake out with a loud voice, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb.

Luke records the most detail about the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ.

After Mary was told by the angel of God that the Holy Spirit would cause her to conceive the Son of God, she visited her cousin Elizabeth.

Elizabeth was was also pregnant with John the Baptist. Luke 1:36 tells us that she was 6 months pregnant at that point.

Notice what happened when Mary arrived at Elizabeth's home.  As soon as Elizabeth heard greetings from her cousin Mary, the babe in her womb leaped and she was filled with the Holy Ghost.

Luke was a physician and he recorded this under the guidance of God's Spirit, proving that the babe in Elizabeth's womb was not a blob of tissue, but a living being, a little person.

The law of God forbids killing anyone.

Exodus 20:13  Thou shalt not kill.

Deuteronomy 5:17  Thou shalt not kill.

The will of God concerning all forms of murder is simple and very clear. We are not to kill anyone, let alone killing a helpless infant.

Only the wicked ones murder the innocent like infants in the womb.

Psalm 10:4-8  The wicked, through the pride of his countenance, will not seek after God: God is not in all his thoughts. 5  His ways are always grievous; thy judgments are far above out of his sight: as for all his enemies, he puffeth at them. 6  He hath said in his heart, I shall not be moved: for I shall never be in adversity. 7  His mouth is full of cursing and deceit and fraud: under his tongue is mischief and vanity. 8  He sitteth in the lurking places of the villages: in the secret places doth he murder the innocent: his eyes are privily set against the poor.

Jesus said "Thou shalt do no murder."

Mat 19:16-19  And, behold, one came and said unto him, Good Master, what good thing shall I do, that I may have eternal life? 17  And he said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God: but if thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments. 18  He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, 19  Honour thy father and thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Jesus always upheld the perfection and righteousness prescribed by the holy law of God.

If a man assaults a woman and cause her to miscarry, he is to be punished.

Exodus 21:22-25  If men strive, and hurt a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23  And if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life, 24  Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25  Burning for burning, wound for wound, stripe for stripe

The law of God is His unchanging holy standard of righteousness. He included a provision that a man who causes a woman to miscarry, must be severely punished.

If his intent was malicious, then his life was forfeited.

Less than 2% of all abortions are due to rape or incest. Less than 3% of all abortions are done due to concerns for the mother's health.

The vast majority of abortions are convenience abortions.

This happens when an infant is killed because having a baby would dramatically change the mother's life, or she cannot afford the baby, or she does not want relationship entanglements.

God's will on the subject of abortion is crystal clear and the believer in Christ, or a pastor should never promote abortion.

Matthew 19:13-15  Then were there brought unto him little children, that he should put his hands on them, and pray: and the disciples rebuked them. 14  But Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven. 15  And he laid his hands on them, and departed thence.

Jesus loved the little children and He rebuked His disciples for not allowing them to come to Him.

There can be no doubt that the same Word who created all things and gives life to all things also knows and loves each infant in the womb.

Let us pray for the Spirit of God to give us understanding and opportunities to share what God says about abortion.

Let us pray for those who live in nations where abortion may be mandated by the government.

It would be a great hardship for a mother to be forced to abort a baby that she wants to give birth to.

Yet, there are places in the world where mandatory abortions happen.

In that situation a family may not have the ability or the means to escape and relocate to a safer place.

If a government forces an abortion on a mother against her will, she is not the one who will be held accountable.

God will hold those authorities to account for destroying the life in her womb.

Please feel free to share what God says about abortion with other people that you know.

Do not be deceived by false teachers who twist the scriptures into a lie.
