What Is Christmas? Pt. 10 His Name Shall be Called Jesus! What a Glorious Name!
A Name that is above all other names!
You shall call His name Jesus!
Luke 1:30-33 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. 31) And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32) He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33) And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.
Here is the origin of the name "Jesus." Normally, a baby would be named after a favorite relative, but in this instance, God picked out the name for His Son. The angel told Mary "You shall call His name Jesus."
The name "Jesus" literally means "Jehovah saves" and it connects Jesus Christ to Jehovah of the Old Testament.
Is this important? Yes! The first time the name Jehovah is used is when God appeared to Moses in a burning bush (Exodus 3:14; 6:3). He commissioned Moses to be Israel's redeemer, leading them out of Egyptian bondage.
Moses leading the Hebrews out of slavery with mighty signs and wonders is a picture of what Jesus Christ would do as the God Man, dying on the cross to pay for our sins, and rising from the dead as proof of the efficacy of His blood.
Thus, Jehovah is uniquely the name of God connected with the redemption of His people from their sins.
Jehovah refers to the unchanging God who always keeps His promises. He is the God who inhabits eternity but will dwell with all who have repentant faith, humble hearts and contrite spirits. He is the self existent God of creation. Jesus is Jehovah in the flesh!
Salvation in the name of Jesus.
Acts 4:12 Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.
Peter preached and testified of Jesus Christ the resurrected Lord of glory to the Sanhedrin and he made it clear that there is no possibility of salvation outside or apart from the name Jesus! The name Jesus is above all other names!
A relationship with the Father by the name of Jesus.
John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. 7) If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him. 8) Philip saith unto him, Lord, shew us the Father, and it sufficeth us. 9) Jesus saith unto him, Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?
Thomas told Jesus that they did not know the way that He was going. Jesus told Thomas, and by extension each of us that "I am the way the truth and the life."
Jesus also made it clear that no one can come to God except though faith in the Son of God, Jesus Christ. The name Jesus is above all other names!
Suffering for the name of Jesus.
Matthew 10:22 And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake: but he that endureth to the end shall be saved.
People will become hateful toward Christians because we insist that you can only go to heaven by repentant faith in Jesus Christ. No other name can offer salvation.
Today it is common to hear things like "All religions lead to heaven." or "God is the same God, they just call Him by different names."
The Bible makes it plain as day that salvation is exclusive, in the sense there is one door, one path, one way, one name of salvation, Jesus Christ.
Believers gathering in Jesus name assures Christ's presence
Matthew 18:20 For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
One of the joys of being part of a church family is that when we meet together to worship God, if there are as few as two, Jesus promises to be in our midst.
I wonder how much our worship would be transformed if we made the effort to remember that He is with us. Would we sing sacred music rooted in Biblical truth? or would we sing the world's music infused with some Christian words?
Our works should be in the name of Jesus.
Mark 9:41 For whosoever shall give you a cup of water to drink in my name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward.
We know that when we are born again, God expects us to pursue good works as defined by His word.
A new life in Christ should have a new pattern of life choices and that should include doing good works that God planned for us to do (Ephesians 2:8-10).
Prayer to the Father in Jesus name.
John 14:13-14 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.14) If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.
Jesus taught us to make our requests known unto God the Father in His name and if our requests are aligned with God's perfect will, Jesus will do it.
The Holy Spirit is sent in Jesus name.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
The Comforter, the Spirit of the living God is sent into our hearts to indwell each believer, in the name of Jesus.
God's Spirit is going to teach us truth from the scriptures and He is going to work on our hearts to make us more like Jesus Christ.
He is our earnest payment of our future heavenly inheritance in Christ. He is our seal to make sure we are safe and secure in the kingdom of God.
The Spirit of God is the richest blessing God grants us this side of heaven, by the name of Jesus.
Full joy by praying in Jesus name
John 16:23-24 And in that day ye shall ask me nothing. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whatsoever ye shall ask the Father in my name, he will give it you. 24) Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.
When we get serious about our prayer life and praying in Jesus name, our joy will grow. A state of blessing and spiritual happiness will fill the heart of each believer who offers supplication and petitions to God the Father in Jesus name.
The name Jesus is highly exalted by God.
Philippians 2:9-11 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10) That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11) And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
God the Father highly exalted His Son, Jesus Christ after He lived a perfect life, was found sinless, and voluntarily died as God's perfect Lamb.
Jesus suffered and endured shame and reproach as He died on the cross for us. He shed His blood to pay for our sins.
Jesus rose from the grave showing that He had victory over death, Hell, the grave, the Devil.
Every knee is going to bow down to the ground and every mouth is going to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord and this will bring glory to the Father.
All believers and angels will gladly shout the name Jesus with great joy and reverence.
All unbelievers and demons will be forced to bow in submission and declare that Jesus is Lord, before He sends them to the eternal lake of fire.
Thoughts to Ponder...
Luke tells us that Mary was instructed what name to choose for her son. His name would be "Jesus" Jehovah saves!
Jesus is the glorious name by which millions of people have been saved from their sins and transgressions.
Jesus is the glorious name whereby countless lives have been radically changed by His transforming power.
Jesus is the glorious name of our Savior, Redeemer, King and Friend. He died to save us and bring us into a right relationship with God. He rose to save us to the uttermost because no man or demon can pluck a believer out of Jesus's hands.
Jesus is the glorious name that grants us access to the throne of God, so that we can come boldly asking for help and grace in our times of need.
Jesus is the name that healed people, cast out demons, controlled the forces of nature, brought the death back to life.
Jesus is the name that brought us the words of eternal life.
