Psalm 9: Pt. 5 Jehovah will punish murderers and He will save those who turn to Him!

Good morning....

Psalm 127:3  Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

Psalm 9:12 When he makes inquisition for blood, he remembers them ...

God will not let murderers escape His judgment.

Psalm 9:12  When he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them: he forgetteth not the cry of the humble.

This is a verse that captivates our attention. Jehovah is the subject in verse 12 and the pronoun "he" refers to Jehovah. This text ties in with the judgment of God that was mentioned in verses 4-8 so this is also a passage of judgment.

Jehovah is the one making "inquisition" for blood. What does this mean? We have to turn back to Genesis 4 to see what this text is telling us.

Genesis 4:1-10  And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2  And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground. 3  And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4  And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: 5  But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. 6  And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7  If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. 8  And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 9  And the LORD said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper? 10  And he said, What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.

You are probably already familiar with this account from the book of beginnings. At this point in time both Cain and Abel have been instructed in the right way to approach God after the fall in Genesis 3. The proper offering was an innocent animal that would be killed and its blood shed to provide a covering for their sins.

Cain did not obey God and became angry!

Cain brought an offering from the ground which was under a curse while Abel offered the right sacrifice. God accepted Abel's offering but rejected Cain's. However, the Lord did give Cain another chance to bring the right offering but Cain refused.

Instead, Cain erupted in anger and killed his brother. What I want you to notice is what God said to Cain. "The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground." In the verses that follow God judges Cain for murder.

Innocent blood cries out to God!

Our text in Psalm 9 is showing us that Jehovah does indeed make inquisition for innocent blood. What this means is that no innocent person has ever died in vain. God will hold murderers accountable because He will make a serious investigation for the blood.

This is part of the reason why God tells us to leave vengeance in His hands. He will always just right and He will always execute righteous judgment. (See Deuteronomy 32:35-43; Psalm 94:1; Romans 3:5; 12:19)

Psalm 9:13-14  Have mercy upon me, O LORD; consider my trouble which I suffer of them that hate me, thou that liftest me up from the gates of death: 14  That I may shew forth all thy praise in the gates of the daughter of Zion: I will rejoice in thy salvation.

King David stops momentarily to give thanks to Jehovah for His mercy. Jehovah always considers the troubles David encounters and helps him face his enemies. Jehovah lifts up David from deadly situations and stops the plots of his enemies.

David was so overjoyed by Jehovah's intervention on his behalf that he commits to praising and rejoicing in His God. The king is joyous for Jehovah's salvation. He is zealous for Jehovah's honor at Jerusalem and he is actively praising God above. He is going to show forth all of Jehovah's praise.

Psalm 9:15-17  The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made: in the net which they hid is their own foot taken. 16  The LORD is known by the judgment which he executeth: the wicked is snared in the work of his own hands. Higgaion. Selah. 17  The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

David follows his praise of Jehovah by some general observations of those who are wicked people. These people dig a pit to trap innocent victims and then they fall into it. They spread nets to catch people and they end up getting caught in their own net. This all pictures the ultimate judgment of God that the wicked will face.

Jehovah is known for His right judgment and the wicked will be judged by their works. What a statement David makes in this text. The wicked shall be turned into hell and the same fate awaits all nations that forget God.

Thoughts to Ponder...

In this post we learned that even though people are murdered every day, every month and every year around the world, Jehovah is fully aware of all victims because He hears their blood cry to Him just as Abel's blood did.

I want to suggest that the entire world stands under the threat of Divine Judgment.  Why? well, in addition to all the murders usually reported there are the murders that are not counted as murder: ABORTION. I was staggered to learn that there are about 56 MILLION innocent babies aborted each year in the world according to the W.H.O.

We know the heart of God on this issue. Numerous times in the Old Testament Israel fell into a specific idolatry where they made their babies pass through the fires of Molech. (See Leviticus 18:20 & 20:2)

Jehovah will make a diligent inquisition for their blood too.

May we pray together for the All Wise Jehovah to protect the innocent unborn babies. May we pray for Jehovah to help people remember the sanctity of human life, because this life comes from God.

So many cultures no longer value life but Jehovah still values each life. His heart is that no one should perish but that they all come to repentant faith in Jesus Christ. Pray that the gospel of Christ keeps going out to reach hearts hardened to sin, hearts that need the salvation supplied by Christ.
