Psalm 9: Pt. 2 Joy and Gladness from knowing Jehovah!
Good morning Readers...
I continue to rejoice at how God is causing this Bible study to find its way to many nations around the world. Please pray with me that the Spirit of God will continue to use these studies to edify believers, to encourage those who are discouraged and to exhort those who have strayed from God, to return to our loving Father.
Most of all, that the Spirit of God will use the scriptures we study to elevate and glorify the Lord Jesus Christ.
Can we be glad and rejoice in Christ?
Psalm 9:2 I will be glad and rejoice in thee: I will sing praise to thy name, O thou most High.
In verse 1 we read of David's unfolding zeal for praising God and we looked at some examples of texts illustrating wholehearted praise. In today's text we see more of the impact from God centered praise.
In this text David declared that he would be "glad and rejoice in thee." What did he mean when he said that? The word "glad" means trembling with a deep seated joy flowing from praise to Jehovah. Rejoicing and gladness of heart come from knowing the LORD.

There is a vast difference in knowing "about" the LORD and actually knowing Him. Our greatest need is knowing Jehovah so that we are brought into a saving relationship with Him where we learn to lean on His all sufficient strength as we daily learn more from Him.
Don't miss this truth. David said he will be glad and rejoice "in thee." We previously studied what it means to the born again believers to be "in Christ" and it was great joy to learn the richness of the blessings we have "in Christ."
The Psalmist communicates an ideal salvation that places us safely in Jehovah's care. How can we fail to be full of joy and gladness when He saves us and keeps us for eternity?
David turned to Jehovah and after exuberant praise he expressed gladness and rejoicing in Him. David was fully trusting in Jehovah as the always caring shepherd guarding and providing for the sheep of His pasture (See Psalm 23; Isaiah 40:1).

Joy and Gladness for Jehovah's unfailing mercies.
Psalm 31:7-8 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities; 8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.
Psalm 31:7-8 I will be glad and rejoice in thy mercy: for thou hast considered my trouble; thou hast known my soul in adversities; 8 And hast not shut me up into the hand of the enemy: thou hast set my feet in a large room.
This Psalm teaches us that we should have gladness and joy welling up in our hearts because of the unfailing, unlimited mercy of Jehovah. He considers our trouble and remembers our frame that we are but dust. He knows we are weak and prone to failure and He has graciously made provision for our shortcomings. Jehovah will never allow the enemy to hem us in just to destroy us. Therefore we should be overflowing with glad hearts and joyous spirits.
Joy and Gladness for those who sincerely seek Jehovah.
Joy and Gladness for those who sincerely seek Jehovah.
Psalm 70:4 Let all those that seek thee rejoice and be glad in thee: and let such as love thy salvation say continually, Let God be magnified.
A second text teaches us about what it means to experience gladness and rejoicing in Jehovah. The word "seek" is like the careful way that we retrace our steps when we misplace something like car keys or a wallet. It is a diligent looking or seeking for the item we lost.
The Psalmist describes a believer overflowing gratitude for the mighty salvation Jehovah brings to all who put their complete trust in Him. This is the great blessing for all people who sincerely seek Him. When Jehovah is found as we pray and search His Word then joy and gladness pour into our heart.
We can live a God pleasing life and when we do, the Psalmist shows us that we will be led to magnify Him above all else. We will make much of Jehovah in our conversation, our thoughts and the actions that we take.
Satisfaction with God's provision leads to joy and gladness.
Psalm 90:14 O satisfy us early with thy mercy; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days.
This text teaches us that the believer should find full satisfaction in the mercy that Jehovah extends to those of contrite spirits and repentant hearts. We should wake every every morning praising our Great God for His everlasting mercies that flow to us abundantly through Christ.
Our mind will be renewed when we seek our LORD and when we express praise to Him for His tender mercies. The way that we think will change when we dedicate ourselves to serious seeking, praising and giving thanks to God. We will enjoy great blessing all of our days as we engage in pursuing the things of God.
A day by day reliance upon Jehovah will bring things into proper focus.
Psalm 118:24 This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.
Here is one more text that shows us the importance of taking one day at a time. Americans are often preoccupied with planning every detail of life, trying to map out what will happen and when. This is a vain pursuit.
Matthew 6:33-34 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. 34 Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.
Our Lord Jesus Christ addressed the tendency we have to plan our lives. He reminds us that we must seek the kingdom of God first and foremost. God's agenda must be our priority. Our focus must be day by day where we live in humble dependency upon our Father in heaven who has committed to caring for each child of God.
Thoughts to Ponder...
Too often believers are immersed in the things of the world instead of the things of God. This robs us of much joy and gladness. The people of God are the ones who should naturally express joy and gladness to Jehovah for all that He has done, is doing and will do for us through eternity.
Thus, we need to have our thinking changed and our minds renewed by the living Word of God. When we focus upon all that the Father has given us "in Christ" then we can rejoice and be glad like the Psalmist.
Jehovah is always merciful toward us. He is always found of those who diligently seek Him. He will fully satisfy us when we fully trust Him with our lives.
