What the Bible Contains: Pt. 4 The Doom of Sinners.

Good morning...

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness;  Romans 1:18

Interestingly the word translated "turn" in Psalm 7:12 is the ...

How Does God view the unrepentant sinner?

Psalm 7:11  God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.

One thing is sure. All people who die in their sins having not turned to Jesus Christ for salvation in repentant faith are doomed to Divine Judgment. When they stand before Holy God they will be judged swiftly and their doom is eternity in Hell.

Why is God angry with unrepentant sinners? Because sin offends a holy, righteous God and He must judge all sin. Because He sacrificed His own Son, Jesus Christ to pay for the sins of the world. Jesus lived a perfect life, suffered and died for our sins and rose from the dead because death had no hold on Him.

John 3:18-20  He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19  And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20  For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved.

The Bible makes it clear. If you believe on the Lord Jesus Christ in repentant faith you are no longer under the condemnation of Holy God (Romans 8:1). However, the sinner who does not believe on Jesus Christ is already living under that divine condemnation.

Sinners in the hand of an angry God.

The sinner does evil things and hates the light of God's Word. Therefore, they are under condemnation. Puritan preacher Jonathon Edwards preached a sermon titled "Sinners in the hands of an angry God" is a powerful description of what the doom of sinners. Below is a quote from his sermon.

"The bow of God's wrath is bent, and the arrow made ready on the string, and justice points the arrow at your heart, and strains the bow, and it is nothing but the mere pleasure of God, and that of an angry God, without any promise or obligation at all, that keeps the arrow one second from being made drunk with your blood. Thus all of you that never had the great change of heart, by the mighty power of the Spirit of God upon your souls; all of you that were never born again, and made new creatures, and raised from being dead in sin, to a new state, and never experienced light and life, are in the hands of an angry God."

Christ will come in flaming fire to take vengeance on sinners.

2 Thessalonians 1:7-9  And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8  In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9  Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

Paul describes what is going to happen when Jesus Christ returns to this earth to establish His kingdom. Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels. A heavenly army of irresistible force will be seen around the world and sinners are going to quake and tremble in excessive fear. The Lord Jesus Christ is going to lead this mighty army.

What are they going to do? The full fury of God's wrath is going to be unleashed. They are coming in flaming fire to take revenge upon all who do not know God and are sinners. They are going to judge the ones who refused to obey the gospel of Jesus Christ.

The final doom of sinners.

What is the doom of sinners? They are going to be punished with permanent destruction and will be unable to withstand the sight of Christ and His army.

Revelation 6:15  And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains; 16  And said to the mountains and rocks, Fall on us, and hide us from the face of him that sitteth on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb: 17  For the great day of his wrath is come; and who shall be able to stand?

All sinners on the earth at the return of Christ will beg the mountains to fall upon them and bury them so that they do not see the glorified Son of God coming to judge the world in righteousness.

Revelation 19:11-15  And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12  His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13  And he was clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. 14  And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean. 15  And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God.

Thoughts to Ponder...

The final doom of sinners is sure. It is recorded in the unchanging Word of God. Today, Christ is in heaven acting as the advocate and high priest of all who are born again. This is still the day of God's grace and the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ is still being preached around the world.

However, the Father in heaven is going to end this period of grace. He is the only One who knows the day and hour that He will send His Son, Jesus Christ back to the earth. Christ will come in the clouds of the air to call His bride (the Church) home for the marriage supper of the Lamb (Revelation 19).

Then, after that grand event, Christ will return as described in the text above and in 2 Thessalonians. The sinners doom is sure. All unrepentant sinners will be sent to hell forever and have to endure the flames of that terrible place.

We who are born again must tell sinners the gospel of Jesus Christ. Only the power of the gospel can change lives and bring the lost into the welcoming light of God. We must not be ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ. (Romans 1:16)
