Isaiah 42. Words of Comfort. Pt. 10

Good morning...

Today we will continue our study on comfort with part #10.

Colossians 3:16  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Isaiah 42:10 Sing Unto The Lord (black)

Jehovah is worthy of all praise for the comfort that He give us.

Isaiah 42:10-12  Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise from the end of the earth, ye that go down to the sea, and all that is therein; the isles, and the inhabitants thereof. 11  Let the wilderness and the cities thereof lift up their voice, the villages that Kedar doth inhabit: let the inhabitants of the rock sing, let them shout from the top of the mountains. 12  Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands.

The idea of singing in this text is a formal, festive assembly ready to worship an All Glorious God. In this text to sing is a response of believing people because they are overwhelmed by the goodness and mercy of God.

It is the same musical term used to describe worship in songs by the Levites but the command to sing and worship is broadened to all the lands and all the people.

The idea of a new song is a song that is fresh and infused with the truth of God's word. Good hymns have music that reflects the heart of worship from scripture and that incorporate a reverence of Jehovah in the sound. Good hymns draw their words from the text of scripture in a fresh and new presentation of old, established truth.

Such music exalts our Almighty God and praises Him for His mighty works on our behalf. The redeemed children of God are to sing our Jehovah's praises unto the ends of the earth. It is to reach from coast to coast and sea to sea.

His praise should be heard in every land. People in the cities, villages, mountains, nations and wilderness are told to shout and to lift up their voices with a mighty outpouring of praise.  This is worship by singing with strong voices that are truly convinced of the glory of God. This is robust singing from the hearts of believers that honors Jehovah.

Oh, I hope that you are part of a "singing" church. There is such joy to experience when the majority of a congregation is convinced of the truth of scripture and passionately respond with songs to Jehovah.

Isaiah 42:12  Let them give glory unto the LORD, and declare his praise in the islands.

There are only 13 places where the phrase "give glory unto the LORD" or a variation of it is used.   I would like to look at a couple of them because they remind us that Jehovah redeemed us and transformed us from non-worshipers into worshipers of the One, True God of heaven and earth.

Psalm 29:1-2  Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength. 2  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.

Psalm 96:7-8  Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. 8  Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come into his courts.

We give Jehovah glory for His strength and power that He exercises to accomplish His good purposes. We give Jehovah the glory that His excellent name deserves. We worship Him in the beauty of His holiness. The truth in these texts shape our responsive worship to the LORD.

In Psalm 29 the mighty people are to give Him glory.  People who have power, authority or are very gifted are to give glory to Jehovah. In Psalm 96 we see that the kindred are to also give glory to Jehovah. Kindred is a word that describes all ethnicity groups, all nations and all people groups.

Thoughts to Ponder...

Both these texts from Psalms command to give Jehovah glory and strength. Both texts command to give Jehovah glory that His name deserves. Psalm 29 adds that we should worship Jehovah in the beauty of His holiness while Psalm 96 says to bring an offering and come into His courts.

Our text from Isaiah 42 also put a strong emphasis upon the happy opportunities that God gives us to use our singing voices to reflect His glory.

As we study God's Word we learn more about Him and have our thinking changed and our minds renewed. As we study God's Word we also have our moral compass realigned with God's Word.

As we study God's Word we become prepared to worship Him aright. Our whole body, souls and spirit will respond when we open a hymnal and sing a song to Jehovah that is full of His truth.

It may prove to be challenging for some of us to worship Jehovah in the midst of an ongoing crisis but I encourage all of us to do this. It is an activity that will draw us closer to our Lord and that will fill us with comfort, joy and renewed hope. May Jesus Christ be praised.
