Psalm 149 Pt. 1 Praise, worship and whole hearts engaged.

Good morning,
We are on a 15 day suspension from our normal daily life.  We are in the high risk age group so we are staying in our home.  This gives everyone homebound many opportunities to offer up praise to our great Redeemer who is very aware of what this world is going through.
Sing Praise unto the LORD!!

A Psalm of praise and worship

Psalm 149:1-9  Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. 2  Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King. 3  Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp. 4  For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. 5  Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. 6  Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand; 7  To execute vengeance upon the heathen, and punishments upon the people; 8  To bind their kings with chains, and their nobles with fetters of iron; 9  To execute upon them the judgment written: this honour have all his saints. Praise ye the LORD.

This psalm has 2 major sections. The first section is found in verses 1-6 which is focused on hearty praise. The last part, verses 6-9 turn to the judgement of Israel's enemies and ultimately that final judgement upon all who reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Praise that shines Jehovah's glory for all to see

Psalm 19:1-2 Praise ye the LORD. Sing unto the LORD a new song, and his praise in the congregation of saints. 2  Let Israel rejoice in him that made him: let the children of Zion be joyful in their King.

Praising the LORD is the exultant worship given to Jehovah as indicated by the word "halal." It means to shine forth in the sense of the LORD making his face to shine upon us. It means praising Jehovah because he is praiseworthy.

We are urged to sing a new song to the LORD. The phrase "sing unto the LORD" is found 9 times in the Bible and I included a few examples below to show us the beauty of this phrase.

Psalm 33:3  Sing unto him a new song; play skilfully with a loud noise.

Sing a new song is connected to good quality instrumental music and with loud or joyful sounds.

Psalm 40:3  And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.

This text tells us that the LORD put a new song into our hearts. When a sinner is converted to Jesus Christ by exercising repentant faith that man or woman or young person will receive new joy and new music in the soul. They have such a changed life that others will see the difference and come to a trusting relationship with God.

Psalm 96:1  O sing unto the LORD a new song: sing unto the LORD, all the earth.

All the earth is asked to sing a new song to Jehovah.

Psalm 98:1  A Psalm. O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

Our last text tells us to praise Jehovah by singing a new song to the LORD because of His awesome power and the wonderful things He has done and is doing and will do through eternity.

Praise includes joyous singing, high quality instrumental music and dance.

Psalm 149:3-6  Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp. 4  For the LORD taketh pleasure in his people: he will beautify the meek with salvation. 5  Let the saints be joyful in glory: let them sing aloud upon their beds. 6  Let the high praises of God be in their mouth, and a twoedged sword in their hand;

In this part of the praising the Psalmist challenges us to praise His name with dance, timbrel and the harp. The reason is that Jehovah takes pleasure in the sheep of His pasture. When we are born again this text tells us that we are beautified with His salvation.

All the redeemed people of God should naturally be a joyful people while they are awake and while they rest upon their beds. We are to offer high praises of God in our mouths with a two edged sword in our hands.

The two edged sword is a reference to the Word of God (Ephesians 6:17 & Hebrews 4:12).

Thoughts to Ponder...

Praise to Jehovah is never ending. It is praising the LORD with our whole heart engaged. Our mind, soul and will are actively involved in singing, playing instruments and pointing others to worship Jehovah.

Praise is set forth in this psalm as the highest occupation that a man, woman or young person can engage in. Jehovah is All Glorious and utterly worthy of all the praise that every created thing can offer.

Does my praise look like this? Is my whole heart engaged in praising my wonderful Savior? Is praising God a passion for me? Has He put a new song in my heart?

If I cannot answer "Yes" to those questions then I am really missing out on understanding the beauty of worship.
