Psalm 148 Pt. 2

Good morning...
Let us praise the Lord this morning for the blessings of knowing Him as we stay in our homes or are on our way to work.  We must remember that our God is good all the time and in all circumstances.  Let our families use this time to draw close to the LORD.....
Praise ye the LORD!!

All created things are to praise Jehovah.

Psalm 148:7-14  Praise the LORD from the earth, ye dragons, and all deeps: 8  Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word: 9  Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars: 10  Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl: 11  Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth: 12  Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children: 13  Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. 14  He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the LORD.

As we finish looking at Psalm 148 the attention of the Psalmist turns from Jehovah's throne room and the heavens to the earth. The earth is commanded to praise Jehovah. The word "dragons" refers to some type of large sea creature like a Megaladon or Masasaurus or possibly a whale.

Hail & fire praise God in their fearsome destruction.

Exodus 9:23-24  And Moses stretched forth his rod toward heaven: and the LORD sent thunder and hail, and the fire ran along upon the ground; and the LORD rained hail upon the land of Egypt. 24  So there was hail, and fire mingled with the hail, very grievous, such as there was none like it in all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.

The text above pairs fire and hail together in a devastating judgment Jehovah sent to Egypt.

Jehovah commands all the elements.

Psalm 18:10-13  And he rode upon a cherub, and did fly: yea, he did fly upon the wings of the wind. 11  He made darkness his secret place; his pavilion round about him were dark waters and thick clouds of the skies. 12  At the brightness that was before him his thick clouds passed, hail stones and coals of fire. 13  The LORD also thundered in the heavens, and the Highest gave his voice; hail stones and coals of fire.

Psalm 18 cited above shows us that fire and hail accompany the presence of the LORD or happened as He spoke.

Psalm 148:8  Fire, and hail; snow, and vapour; stormy wind fulfilling his word:

All the elements of nature like fire, hail, snow, fog or strong winds always fulfill Jehovah's word. Like the planets and constellations that perform their assigned functions according to God's design, fire, hail, snow, winds and fog also do what God designed them to do.

Geological features and all creatures are to praise the Lord.

Psalm 148:9-10  Mountains, and all hills; fruitful trees, and all cedars: 10  Beasts, and all cattle; creeping things, and flying fowl:

Other beautiful structures of the earth are included in the exhortation to praise. Mountains and hills, smaller fruit trees and majestic cedar trees are to praise Jehovah.

Beasts that walk upon the earth and things that creep like snakes or lizards and flying birds are also commanded to join in the praise.

It may seem somewhat strange to think that inanimate things like mountains and hills, or living things like trees or the weather are commanded to praise Jehovah. It may seem strange to think of commanding animals, birds and aquatic creatures to praise the LORD.

The Psalmist is using poetic language much like the way that wisdom is personified in the book of proverbs (Proverbs 8:1-36).

Last of all, mankind is invited to join in this symphony of praise.

Psalm 148:11-12  Kings of the earth, and all people; princes, and all judges of the earth: 12  Both young men, and maidens; old men, and children:

The last group on earth to be invited to praise God are humans. The Psalmist begins with commanding the kings and rulers and judges to join in offering praise to Jehovah. Then he broadens his scope to bring in young men and maidens along with old men and children.

Jehovah is to be praised for many reasons.

Psalm 148:13-14  Let them praise the name of the LORD: for his name alone is excellent; his glory is above the earth and heaven. 14  He also exalteth the horn of his people, the praise of all his saints; even of the children of Israel, a people near unto him. Praise ye the LORD.

Now, the Psalmist gives us reasons to praise Jehovah. First, he tells us to praise His name because it is excellent. His glory is over all created things. He is to be praised because He lifts up His people and defends them. All Jehovah's saints and the children of Israel all are commanded to praise Jehovah.

Thoughts to Ponder....

This psalm has such a swelling praise that explodes from the heart of the Psalmist as he was moved by the Spirit of God. All aspects of creation are commanded to praise Him. Inanimate objects like mountains and hills along with all living things are to be preoccupied with praise.

Those who are born again should be ready to respond in praise to Jehovah because He lifted us out of the miry clay of sin and set us upon Jesus Christ, our solid rock.
